‘Take Me Back to Derbytown’

With this painting, I set out to capture the comings and goings of some of the local Kimberley people as they use the bus service that runs across this vast region, connecting families in both grief and joy. There is such a huge network of family connections all throughout the Kimberley.
I also wanted to portray the vibrancy of this area (especially during the dry season May - Sept) through the painting of the mighty boab trees and birds.
I don’t usually paint buildings, so this was my first challenge in starting this painting. The Derby Visitor Centre was the backdrop of this scene, because this is where the bus service comes twice per weekday to drop off & pick up its passengers. Right in the heart of Derby, West Kimberley.
